Pink diamonds are one of the most expensive and rarest diamonds. Although diamonds do come in different colors Pink is the rarest type which makes them even more of a girl's best friend. The Darya-i-Nur which is the largest pink diamond in the world weighs in at an amazing 185 carats.
It is no longer all that strange to see diamonds in different colors as they are becoming more fashionable than their white counter-parts. Of all the largest diamonds in the world there is only one that ranks in the top 66 although there are some other famous pink stones, showing just how rare these diamonds are. It is only just in the past few years that the Argyle mine in Australia has started to produce a large number of different colored diamonds and included in those are the rare pink ones. Not surprisingly the increased availability of these rare stones has increased the interest in them as well as a higher demand and as such the Argyle mine now produces 90% of the world's total supply of pink diamonds.
You may be asking by now how expensive is a pink diamond? With exactly the same qualities as that of a near white stone the cost of a pink stone far outweighs that of a non-colored one. Diamonds - even those that have been enhanced to look pink are more expensive than the white ones with the same qualities. Obviously those that are naturally pink are more expensive than the enhanced ones and it is those with the deepest color pink that command the highest prices as with any other color there are varying degrees of pink but it is those with the deepest color that are sold for extraordinary prices. It is estimated that the world's total production of natural pink diamonds is only about 50 to 60 carats per year showing just how rare this stone is.
You may be thinking so what's all the fuss about diamonds when there are Rubies or Pink Sapphires to choose from instead. Sapphires even the most expensive ones do not have the same kind of sparkle that only a pink diamond can produce. And even though sapphires are a very tough hard wearing stone they still cannot match the toughness of a diamond, hence you don't see sapphire cutting machines used in industrial settings.

As with all diamonds the value of a pink diamond can be increased with the jewelers cut and the setting that it is introduced to.
